Outdoor Furniture Realities

In over 30 years of working with clients, we constantly field questions about getting the “best outdoor furniture.” Our response is a slight shake of the head, a lowered tone of voice, and then we utter the tongue-in-cheek pronouncement, “There’s really no such thing as outdoor furniture.”

Of course we believe in outdoor furniture, but you can’t leave pieces out 24/7 and expect durability and longevity. The weather is no friend to furniture - any kind of furniture. Even the most expensive and durable items wear out or need replacement hardware, new glides, or reupholstering. And certainly all furniture needs regular care and cleaning.

Outdoor furniture faces challenges with weather, and it's a common concern for many homeowners. Everyone wants their patio, pool, and outdoor rooms to be furnished, so we definitely have to consider some solutions for you. So with our caution about anything left outside being vulnerable, let’s move on to more positive ground. Here's why and how to help your outdoor furniture better withstand the elements:

Why Outdoor Furniture Struggles in the Weather:

  • Sunlight (UV rays): Sun exposure can cause fading, weakening, and degradation of materials like fabric and wood.

  • Moisture (Rain, Snow, Humidity): Moisture can lead to:

    • Rust: Metal furniture, especially iron or steel, can rust when exposed to moisture.

    • Rot/Warping: Wood can rot, warp, or crack if not properly sealed.

    • Mold & Mildew: Trapped moisture can create a breeding ground for mold and mildew.

  • Temperature Fluctuations: Materials can expand and contract with temperature changes, potentially causing damage.

  • Wind: Strong winds can damage lightweight furniture or blow items around.

How to Protect Your Outdoor Furniture:

  1. Choose Durable Materials: Look for weather-resistant materials like:

    • Teak: Naturally resists rot, insects, and moisture.

    • Aluminum: Lightweight and rust-proof.

    • Resin wicker: UV resistant and moisture resistant.

    • HDPE lumber: Made from recycled plastics, durable, and low maintenance.

  2. Use Protective Covers: Invest in high-quality, breathable furniture covers that are water-resistant and UV-resistant.

  3. Store Furniture Indoors: If possible, store outdoor furniture indoors or in a sheltered area during severe weather or the off-season.

  4. Regular Cleaning and Maintenance: Clean your furniture regularly to remove dirt, debris, and prevent mold growth.

  5. Apply Protective Sealants: For materials like wood, consider applying a sealant to protect against moisture and UV damage.

  6. Secure Furniture in Windy Areas: Anchor lightweight furniture or use cushion straps to prevent damage from wind.

  7. Consider UV-resistant Fabrics: Choose fabrics like Sunbrella or other solution-dyed acrylic fabrics for cushions and upholstery to resist fading.

By taking these steps, you can significantly prolong the life and appearance of your outdoor furniture, allowing you to enjoy your outdoor space for years to come.
