Robert Avon Lees

Luminous Being (24 x 24)

Jay Johnson - Robert Avon Lees is a gifted architect, landscape designer, and fine artist. I've known him for almost 30 years now, and can only say that his fine art - paintings and mixed-media sculpture - is indicative of this man's talent. Mr. Lees is definitely channeling the Mother Ship with his latest creations - and we're talking alient landscapes and compositions that are completely other worldly. With that said, they also reflect the inner self and map out new personal terrain that is both intimate and secretive.

Inner Pattern (27 x 23)

With a focus is on integrating fine art, design, and architecture, the artist creates in an improvisational manner with his materials. The results are bold, colorful, and strong. And just in time, too. Today's home decor demands boldness and color, and even the most traditional homes require bursts of fresh modernity (no more frowning Victorian portraiture, please).

Red Glow Rise (16 x 20)As a child growing up in Minneapolis, Lees was exposed to modern art at the Walker Art Center, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Major exhibits of Kandinsky and other abstract painters made a deep impression on him.

The Return (31 x 31)Lees’ paintings are spontaneous and colorful, yet deep, abstract expressions reflecting his interest in the merging of contemporary scientific theories with mystical and metaphysical views. His content expresses his vision of space, cellular matter, energy, transformation and other dimensions. His compositions have an organic presence and aliveness.

Forms and colors gain meaning as they relate to our inner selves. Used separately or in relationships, colors and forms are metaphorical means of expressing different emotions, movements, and qualities of life.

Blue Cluster (20 x 16)Lees creates a dynamic, highly-charged surface by building up as many as 30 layers of acrylic paint on archival board or canvas using “chance” and allowing “accidents” to happen along the way.

My challenge in painting is to create a pure intuitive dialogue emotionally and intellectually using deep insights.
