Irwin Weiner ASID - It's fitting that on Mother's Day we turn our attention to beauty. At the High Point Market in NC, I discovered SkLO Studio's showroom. A California company dedicated to handmade materials and committed to the traditions of Czech glassblowing, SkLO has a terrific range of decorative objects. I liked their color, irregularity, shape, and texture. Whether functional or decorative, look for these objects at a store new you in the coming months, or shop on the SkLO website. Irwin Weiner ASID - Continuing my High Point Market (NC) furniture finds during a recent visit with a client, I came across District Eight Design, hailing from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. They impressed me with their blend of timeless design, industrial chic, and custom surprises. Take their ping pong table, for instance (see photos above). It serves as a dining table when you're not serving a fast one over the amazing handmade leather net. Use this statement piece in your family room, dining room, or office conference room because of its multi-functionality. It's smart to invest in pieces that serve a multitude of purposes, particularly for today's active family and small office lifestyle.

Irwin Weiner ASID - I just got back from a client shopping trip to High Point, NC. What is there to see there that you can't see in New York City? High Point is home to America's "ready-to-wear collection" of furniture, open only to the design trade, and it's a great way to spot trends for what products, styles, and designs will soon flood the retail market. Here are some of the trends I observed.
- The quality of design has improved a lot, largely because of the production skills of the mass market manufacturers. Lucite and other materials, once proprietary to the high-end custom furnishing market, are now commonplace in lower priced merchandise.
- Many case goods can be found in gray wood, wood that is distressed. It's not as formal as other pieces. Nice and relaxed.
- But there is glam in the mass market aplenty. Mirrored surfaces, faux shagreen, acrylic, high-gloss lacquer - these lend a sense of luxury and Hollywood to a lot of furniture and accessories.
Without following these trends, I really liked the appealing colors - whites, grays, and taupes - of the wares from Bliss Studio. While my client wasn't blown away, I admired these pieces as being timeless. The stone colors of the items outshine the outdated yellow-y look of mass-produced Country French style furnishings. The Gustavian influence from Sweden is a safe bet for many Northern clime homes, with our weaker light. Click on any of the product photos in this post for more product information, and I look forward to showcasing more High Point discoveries in the coming weeks!
Irwin Weiner ASID - Why is it that most homeowners feel the need to feather their nests with brand-new furniture? I understand sitting in a comfy club chair can lead to falling in love with it in a showroom - comfort is a big driving force when it comes to making purchases. People also like clicking around online and coming up with a fantastic piece of furniture or an accessory that looks amazing. While I use both offline and online retail as a way to help my clients furnish their homes, I also encourage auction purchases.
Bidsquare is a relatively new service that I highly recommend for both designers and their clients. You can participate online in timed auctions: auctions that run for a period of time when you can submit a bid, counter it if someone outbids you, and keep on bidding until the auction period times out. Think eBay and you have the idea.
Bidsquare also has live auctions: you can submit your bid online in real time, follow the action with bids submitted by others actually in the auction and bidders in contact with auction agents over the phone, and keep submitting bids to either be the high bidder and winner of the lot you're bidding on, or drop out when you reach your spending limit.
With Bidsquare, you can check in on many different auctions and preview, then bid live or over time on lots. Pictured above is David Rago, of TV's Antique's Road Show fame, presiding over one of his always-quality Rago Arts auctions. His is one of several great houses working with Bidsquare. And this collection of well-curated items makes Bidsquare worthy of your attention. You'll certainly love browsing for treasures, and you'll love the convenience of online bidding, with either live or timed auctions. Play the video at the top of this post for an introduction to Bidsquare.
Irwin Weiner ASID - Sometimes I find a surprising treatment that I just have to share. Hats off to Souda for creating a wonderful side table (tall or short in both charcoal and grey) in sculptural concrete. Have you ever tried to find an interesting side table lately? You'll know how difficult it is, as I've scoured resources for clients and many times had to resort to furniture auctions to find something worthy from the past.
However, here we have contemporary worthiness and the novel use of durable material - a real conversation piece.
